Instagram users officially have a new obsession, and honestly, it feels like Snapchat just got thrown into a Gen Z blender. The app’s new “Instants” feature is slowly rolling out to more accounts, and people are already spiralling over one major question: can you replay them after opening?

Short answer? Absolutely not. Instagram said goodbye to permanence and fully entered its “live in the moment” era.



Instants are Instagram’s latest attempt at making social media feel less polished and more chaotic in a fun way. Instead of perfectly curated Stories or heavily edited photo dumps, Instants focus on spontaneous pictures shared directly with friends.

Think blurry selfies, random food photos, or chaotic late-night moments you would never normally post publicly.

Users can send Instants either to Close Friends or their followers, and the photos appear inside inboxes like tiny mystery messages waiting to be opened.

No. Once somebody opens your Instant and views it, the photo disappears permanently.

There is no replay button. No second chance. No accidental rewatch while stalking old chats at 2 a.m.

Instagram designed Instants to feel temporary and casual, almost like digital disposable cameras. The entire feature revolves around fleeting moments instead of permanent content.

And before anybody gets ideas, screenshots are blocked too. So if you were planning to save somebody’s chaotic selfie forever, Instagram has already shut that plan down.


Here is where things get slightly less stressful.

Although Instants disappear after being viewed, unopened Instants remain available for up to 24 hours. After that, they vanish from inboxes completely.


However, the sender still gets access to them privately through Instagram’s archive feature for up to one year.

Users can even turn old Instants into recap Stories later, which feels suspiciously sentimental for a feature built around disappearing content.
