A newly released jail phone call involving Mackenzie Shirilla has drawn renewed attention following the release of Netflix’s true-crime documentary The Crash, which revisits the fatal 2022 car crash that led to her conviction.
In 2023, Shirilla received two concurrent life sentences after being found guilty of murdering Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan. The documentary explores the case through interviews with family members, friends and people connected to both victims and Shirilla herself.
Now, additional prison calls not included in the documentary have begun circulating publicly.
One phone conversation, reportedly recorded shortly after Shirilla’s conviction while she was being held in Cuyahoga County Jail, features a discussion between Mackenzie and her mother, Natalie Shirilla.
During the call, the pair speak about daily life inside the facility, including educational programmes, visitation schedules and available resources for inmates.
At one point, Mackenzie reflects on how the prison environment appeared designed to help inmates adapt, though she expressed discomfort with the idea of becoming emotionally settled there.
The conversation later turns toward rehabilitation, with Mackenzie reportedly insisting she did not see herself as someone needing rehabilitation in the same way as other inmates convicted of crimes.
As the discussion continued, Mackenzie also shared fears about what her future could look like after prison.
She spoke emotionally about concerns over ageing while incarcerated and questioned whether she would still have the opportunity to build a family or live a normal life after serving her sentence.
The newly released audio has resurfaced amid renewed public interest generated by The Crash, which also includes Mackenzie discussing her ongoing appeal and claims regarding her medical condition, POTS, which she argues contributed to the fatal incident.
Since its release, The Crash has sparked widespread online discussion surrounding the case, with viewers debating the documentary’s portrayal of Shirilla, the victims and the legal arguments presented during the trial.
The newly surfaced phone call adds another layer to the public conversation, offering a more personal glimpse into Shirilla’s early days in custody following one of the most widely discussed criminal cases in recent years.
