Rihanna's promotional visit sparked controversy
Rihanna recently visited the city of dreams, Mumbai, India, after two years, and she did not return without controversy. She arrived at Kalina Airport on 23rd April, 2026. Shortly after, she was all over our social media feeds. From collaborating with influencers to serving looks, RiRi had us all swooning.

One moment that especially grabbed attention was her visit to Antilia, where she was seen performing pooja and embracing Hindu rituals, including doing aarti in line with Sanatani traditions. At the same time, the trip had a clear business angle, she unveiled new Fenty pop-ups in Mumbai through Tira and Sephora as part of her push into the Indian market.

However, controversy soon followed. A clip of the singer feeding a cow while carrying a designer ‘cowhide bag’ from Dior sparked debate online, sparking criticism against the otherwise beloved global star.

Is Hinduism becoming a Marketing strategy for global icons?

Rihanna has been seen embracing the Hindu culture and performing multiple rituals with the Ambanis. This practice was also noticed before during the visits of Footballer Lionel Messi and The Kardashians. It's honestly beautiful to see how these global icons are welcoming new culture. But the question remains, are they doing it just to maintain cordial relationships with the RICH and expand their business, or is it coming straight from their heart? Netizens are calling out Rihanna even though she has been stated as one of the most humble artists over the years.

Why did Rihanna’s India visit turn controversial?

The internet has been going gaga over Rihanna's surprise visit. The Diamonds crooner wore multiple designer outfits, embracing Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra's jewellery during the launch called "Fenty Beauty ki Haveli." Amidst all this, the cow controversy reignited. The bag she carried, which, according to the Dior website, is made of calfskin, sparked backlash. Fans are now calling out the hypocrisy, coining phrases like "Feed the cow. Wear the cow."

Collaboration of the riches

Rihanna was hosted by the Ambanis, including Isha Ambani, Shloka Mehta, Radhika Merchant and Anant Ambani. She participated in Aarti and ‘phoolon ki holi’ which went viral over the internet. She launched her Fenty Beauty Brand pop-up in partnership with Tira/Reliance Retail. They also hosted her for a special lunch at their residence. Several influencers and beauty content creators attended the launch supporting her expansion.

What truly melted Indian fans’ hearts were the little things. Rihanna charmed everyone by saying “Shukriya” and “Namaste,” even asking paparazzi how to say “thank you” before quickly picking it up herself. The sweet, unscripted moment went viral within hours, with many praising her humility and warmth, proving she is one of the most endearing global stars to visit India in recent times.

Indian market is gaining supreme importance

Over the years, India has steadily emerged as a key market for global stars. Be it beauty or be it concerts, the country is on everyone’s radar. Ever since Coldplay performed in India, there has been a noticeable rise in global artists visiting, some for concerts, others for high-profile weddings, brand collaborations, or even spiritual experiences. The international artists understand the demographic depth of India, and therefore it is one of the prime money-making places right now.

There is a sheer increase in concert marketing along with the Ambanis popularising and inviting many global icons. Netizens for many years wanted their favourites to come to India, and finally, it is happening.

From Rare Beauty (owned by Selena Gomez) to Fenty Beauty (owned by Rihanna), several international brands collaborated with desi beauty content creators. Surely, it will take more time to create the impact, but it’s good to start somewhere.

As for the controversy, it remains to be seen whether Rihanna will address the cowhide bag incident or if it will simply fade away as just another gossip cycle moment.
