What happens in Kartavya Netflix? Pawan’s shocking final choice exposes honour killings child trafficking and corruption in Jhamli

Netflix’s Kartavya is not just another crime thriller. The film mixes police corruption, honour killings, caste violence, and child trafficking into one deeply disturbing story set in rural India. At the centre of the story is SHO Pawan, an honest police officer trying to do the right thing in a place where power and fear control everything.


As the investigation moves forward, Pawan slowly discovers that the system around him is broken from the inside. The film builds tension through emotional conflicts and difficult moral choices, leading to a violent ending that leaves viewers questioning whether justice was really served at all.

The film follows SHO Pawan, a respected police officer assigned to protect a journalist visiting the town of Jhamli. The journalist arrives to investigate serious allegations against Anand Shri, a powerful religious reform leader accused of using child labour and abusing minors. Before the truth can come out, the journalist is murdered, creating panic and suspicion throughout the town.

The investigation becomes even more personal for Pawan when he learns that his younger brother Deepak has secretly married a girl from another caste. In Jhamli, intercaste marriage is considered unacceptable, and couples are often targeted by violent mobs in the name of honour. Pawan now finds himself trapped between his duty as a police officer and his responsibility as a brother. As pressure increases from every side, Pawan realises that both cases are connected to a much darker system of corruption and violence that controls the town.


Throughout the film, Anand Shri is shown as a respected spiritual figure with political influence. However, Pawan slowly uncovers the horrifying truth behind his public image. Anand Shri is secretly running a child trafficking and abuse network under the disguise of religion and social service.

The film reveals that childless couples are manipulated into giving away children, believing they are helping them live better lives. Instead, the children are abused, controlled, and used for criminal activities. Many of them are eventually killed to erase evidence.

One of the victims is Harpal, a teenager who was taken by Anand Shri years earlier. Harpal was physically and mentally tortured until he became obedient. Anand Shri then forced him to murder the journalist with the promise that he would finally be reunited with his parents. The promise was a lie, as Harpal was always meant to be silenced after the crime.This revelation completely changes the direction of the story and exposes the scale of corruption inside the town.

When Pawan understands that Harpal is not a criminal but a victim, he tries to save him from the system. At first, he plans to use Harpal’s confession to expose Anand Shri and arrest everyone involved in the trafficking network. However, Pawan quickly realises that powerful people inside the police force and local administration are protecting Anand Shri.


Fearing for Harpal’s life, Pawan attempts to negotiate quietly and keep the boy safe. He even agrees to avoid publicly naming Anand Shri if Harpal is protected. But this plan falls apart because betrayal already exists inside Pawan’s own circle.

Ashok, one of Pawan’s trusted men, secretly supports the corrupt system. He leaks important information and helps the criminals stay ahead of the investigation. This betrayal eventually leads to Harpal’s death and pushes Pawan toward complete emotional breakdown.

Deepak and Preeti’s relationship becomes one of the film’s strongest emotional threads. Their intercaste marriage represents the old social divisions that still exist in many rural communities. The town views their marriage as a disgrace, and violent groups begin hunting them down.

Pawan desperately tries to save the couple while also handling the trafficking case. Unfortunately, the corruption and hatred surrounding him make it impossible to protect everyone. Later in the film, Ashok confesses that he revealed the couple’s hiding location to others.


The biggest shock comes when Pawan discovers that his own father murdered Deepak by slitting his throat. His father believed he was protecting family honour and social tradition. This moment completely destroys Pawan emotionally because the violence he fought outside his home was also living inside his own family.

The final act of Kartavya becomes brutally violent as Pawan completely loses faith in the system. After learning the truth about Harpal and Deepak, he decides to personally punish the people responsible.

Pawan takes Ashok along while pretending everything is normal. During the confrontation with Anand Shri’s men, Pawan suddenly kills the henchmen and forces Ashok to confess. Ashok admits his betrayal and reveals the truth about Deepak’s murder. Realising that there is no escape left, Ashok faces Pawan’s anger directly.

Pawan then returns home and takes his father to a field. Unable to accept what his father did in the name of honour and tradition, Pawan shoots him dead. The scene becomes one of the film’s most disturbing moments because Pawan finally crosses the same moral line he spent the entire film fighting against.


The ending strongly suggests that Pawan becomes trapped inside the same cycle of violence that destroyed his town. Throughout the film, he believed justice and law could protect innocent people. But after repeated betrayal, corruption, and personal loss, he abandons legal methods and chooses revenge instead.

In the final scenes, Pawan openly admits to his wife that he became exactly like the people he opposed. The town justified killing in the name of honour and social rules, and now Pawan has also chosen killing as his solution. Even though his victims were guilty, the film questions whether violence can truly create justice.

Pawan also worries about his son growing up in the same toxic environment. Earlier in the story, his father had already begun teaching the child rigid social beliefs during village meetings. The film ends by showing how hatred and prejudice pass from one generation to another unless someone breaks the cycle completely.

Kartavya uses its crime thriller story to talk about larger social problems that still exist in parts of society. The film focuses heavily on caste discrimination, honour killings, child exploitation, institutional corruption, and mob mentality. It shows how dangerous collective beliefs can become when people stop questioning tradition and blindly follow power.


The movie also highlights how children become victims of systems created by adults. Harpal is abused into becoming a killer, while Pawan’s son slowly absorbs the same harmful ideas surrounding him. The story repeatedly asks whether society has truly progressed or if old forms of violence still survive under modern appearances.

Rather than giving viewers easy answers, Kartavya leaves them with difficult questions about morality, justice, and revenge. That uncertainty is what makes the ending stay with viewers long after the film ends.
